Overcoming High-Risk Challenges During The Pandemic

This Success Story comes from our Beaverton Connecting Communities Program. Angelica has been receiving services with us since the autumn of 2020.

Key Challenges

This last year has been very stressful for Angelica because she is a high risk individual for COVID-19 due to extreme respiratory issues. When she began to work with us, she was frustrated and depressed because she was stuck at home and afraid to go outside due to exposure risk. We made a plan for her to take some of our classes along with some classes at Portland Community College so that we could spend this time in lockdown to get her prepared to find a better job once she is able to go into the community again.

How We've Helped

We were able to help Angelica by providing her with an iPad so she could connect with us and her friends and family through Zoom. Angelica began by attending English and Computer Job Readiness classes with our instructors. Angelica said she was glad that she had something productive to do while she was unable to work, and she felt that the positive reinforcement and direct one-on-one attention has been encouraging and that she finally feels like she is prepared to work in an English-speaking office environment. She had experience working in Spanish Immersion Montessori schools; but she had never used computers for work, so our staff has dedicated a lot of time to helping Angelica learn the Google Office Suite and how to effectively navigate a computer in a typical, modern work environment. Angelica has the goal of moving into a bilingual social service position in the Hillsboro or Beaverton school districts working with the Latinx community.

Over the past several months, our staff has also provided some emergency financial assistance to Angelica, including help with rent, utility bills, and acquiring food. This assistance helped Angelica get through a difficult holiday season so she can focus on creating a stable future for herself and her family.

Next Steps (Toward the Future)

Currently, our staff has moved into the career exploration phase with Angelica, and they have been working to narrow down her possibilities in order to move into the final phase of Job Development in the spring. We are moving forward with high expectations as Angelica has excelled and thrived within her classes at our program.
Keep up the great work Angelica!
