Adjusting to New Surroundings and New Challenges

Introduction

Orrin is a Navy veteran who originally enrolled in our Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP) in September of 2019 after receiving an eviction notice for non-payment of rent. Orrin was able to find a position doing janitorial work in October of the same year; however after a couple of no call/no shows, he lost his position in February 2020. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic and several business closures in March 2020, Orrin struggled to find an alternate position, ultimately losing his apartment and finding himself homeless.

A Safe Home, But Fewer Opportunities

Orrin was able to find temporary housing with a family member; however without income, he was once again at risk of eviction. Additionally, Orrin’s move added further barriers to his search for employment, because he was now located in a more rural location with limited transportation and fewer employment opportunities. Despite this, Orrin was willing and motivated to secure employment.

Assistance Provided

Easterseals HVRP assisted Orrin in finding transportation, cold calling multiple employers, building his resume, and even applying to positions for him within his rural community. Though opportunities were scarcer (particularly those that fit his desired work schedule), we continued to encourage Orrin, and we assisted him in obtaining training through OHSA for housekeeping/janitorial practices.

New Employment and New Hope

After a few months, we were informed of a new vacancy in a janitorial position with BlueSun (one of our temp agency partners), and we knew it was the perfect fit for Orrin. Orrin was hired through BlueSun at $12.63 per hour, working approximately two hours per day, Monday through Friday which easily fit into his schedule. Once he was employed, we further assisted Orrin by purchasing him reusable face masks and walking shoes to meet his new dress code. Orrin reports loving his new position and he happily chats with us about it during all retention interactions.

Moving Toward the Future

With his new job secured, Orrin is currently working on finding permanent housing for himself and his son. He has been referred to our Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program for housing assistance, and he is hopeful about his future prospects.
