Stabler grant establishes M-Power activity fund

Our M-Power program is designed to empower teens and young adults with disabilities to live independent and rewarding lives in their community. The program provides the support they need to develop critical life skills, participate in community life, develop a peer social network and engage in satisfying activities of their own choosing. Volunteering encourages participants to choose a nonprofit organization that is in alignment with their personal interests and then use their skills and talents to support the organization in fulfilling its mission. By engaging in recreation and social activities, participants explore their community and discover the many fun and interesting pursuits available. At the same time, they are learning how to access community resources and developing skills that support independence.

The activity fund established by the the Stabler Foundation grant will help to offset the cost of activities, such as going to the movies or athletic events or taking personal enrichment classes, so that young adults can pursue personally enriching experiences with their peers. The cost to participate is often a barrier for teens and young adults with disabilities and prohibits them from fully participating in the life of the community or pursuing their interests. With support from the activity fund, participants will not only have the resources needed to access and enjoy enriching experiences, but also learn how to budget and manage money. In this way, they learn essential life skills and how to make independent choices; gain confidence in their abilities; and become more engaged in financial planning.
