Preparing for the Transition from High School

Easter Seals Central Texas is teaming up with Lakeway Regional Medical Center to help prepare teens with disabilities for jobs and independence.

Austin, TX, April 13, 2016

Easter Seals Central Texas knows that transition from high school can be a daunting challenge for many young adults with disabilities. Depending on their curriculum and educational environment, they may not yet have the skills necessary for becoming productive and independent members of their community. To help create a better and clearer path for these students to follow, Easter Seals is bringing Project SEARCH to Central Texas.

Project SEARCH is a national internship program, designed for students with disabilities during their last year of high school. Throughout the school year, students participate in an immersive program that includes training, career exploration, and job coaching. The student receives three targeted internships on a rotating basis, learning core skills necessary for entry-level employment and then growing and building on those skills with assistance from a mentor and a job coach.

Easter Seals Central Texas will serve as the Community Rehabilitation Partner, working with the interns to provide job coaching and support throughout the year as well as assistance with job placement into permanent work once the school year has ended. Project SEARCH will be an excellent addition to the Employment Services program at ESCT, which works with adults with disabilities to help them prepare for, find, and keep employment.

Lakeway Regional Medical Center

The host business site that will provide the internships will be Lakeway Regional Medical Center, a 106-bed, full-service hospital in the Texas Hill Country. With core values of integrity, excellence, caring, and safety, and a mission to improve quality of life, they are an excellent fit to provide internships for these students.

Project SEARCH will launch this August in conjunction with Lake Travis ISD and Eanes ISD. For more information about the program, or to see how you can participate, please contact Michelle Wilkinson, Director, Community Services at mwilkinson@eastersealstx.org, or call (512) 444-6082.
