Catching up with Fit Ability Client Afra

April 15, 2016

Afra

We had a chance to catch up with Fit Ability Program user Afra Al-Mussawir and find out her feelings about the Program, which came to Easter Seals this past September.

Hi Afra! First, what’s a fun fact about you?

I was born in Baghdad – my first language is Arabic and my last name means “The Creator” or “The Photographer.”

How did you learn about the Fit Ability Program?

I know about the Fit Ability Program because I was a regular user of the St. David’s Wheelchair Fitness Center, and I am so grateful – as many of us are – that Easter Seals has the Fit Ability Program as an option since the St. David’s WFC has closed down!

What do you like best about the Fit Ability Program?

I have looked at gyms like 24 Hour Fitness and the YMCA, but those facilities are difficult for a wheelchair user to work out in. Also, it is welcoming to be able to do self-directed exercise among other wheelchair users. For one thing, I feel like I am taking an active role in my own recovery, and for another, I don’t feel like an oddity or an anomaly when I am surrounded by other users.

What do you wish more people knew about the Program?

I wish more people knew about the Fit Ability Program and would keep us in mind when a friend or family member experiences an injury or illness that affects their ability to move any part of their body. Everyone here is friendly, the therapists are knowledgeable, and the equipment is accessible! Spread the word and don’t be shy about it. I’m sure there are so many people out there who can benefit from the Fit Ability Program if they just knew about it.
