Introduction

Bradley Renfeldt is a US Army Veteran who was honorably discharged. Bradley and his newly wed husband came to our Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program after experiencing issues due to the effects of Covid-19. Prior to working with us, he was struggling with addiction and sought the assistance that he needed in order to recover. His job at the time was gracious enough to allow him the time he needed to work through that challenge. After bettering himself and returning back to work, Bradley was faced with a lay off due to the repercussions of Covid-19. Since then, Bradley had been struggling with finding a stable income and locking down permanent housing. These issues prompted Bradley to reach out for additional assistance in bettering his life, and it brought him to Easterseals Oregon.

Holding Onto Hope

At the end of June, 2020, Bradley and his husband, Johnathan came in to complete the enrollment requirements of SSVF. From there, his determination and urgency sprouted rapidly. Bradley and Johnathan hit the ground running. At the first housing case conference, they came in with several options that they were interested in. This became a clear theme for them - every time we would meet, Bradley would have put in as much work on his own as he possibly could. He called it his homework. Throughout the process, Bradley and Johnathan were met with several obstacles that they worked hard to overcome. Seeing them work through outside struggles while continuing to work hard with our staff to find stable housing was quite the inspiration, and it brought smiles to our faces on a regular basis.

A New Start

Along with the support of our SSVF team, Bradley was able to locate a potential home within the Hilltop House Apartments. Soon after submitting their application, Bradley and Johnathan were approved to move into the apartment that they had chosen. Our SSVF program paid for the application fee, the security deposit and the first month’s rent, making it possible for Bradley and his husband to move in while overcoming numerous barriers. With the tenacity and drive that Bradley showed throughout the process of overcoming all of his obstacles, we would expect nothing less. Bradley and Jonathan have made it clear that they are so grateful for everything that the SSVF program was able to assist with. They would also like to give a special thank you to the Homes for Heroes program for providing them with some of the essentials to starting their home. The “Welcome Home” box Bradley and Johnathan were set up with brand new kitchen supplies, a vacuum, blankets, pillows and many other household necessities.

Bradley and Johnathan would like to share their deepest gratitude to everyone who played even a small part in accomplishing their goal of finding permanent housing and they are so excited to finally have a place to call home.
