Norberto - A Connecting Communities Success Story

Connecting Communities participant, Norberto, posing in the Beaverton Connecting Communities office. He is wearing a protective mask, but you can tell he is smiling. He's holding some supplies provided by our program, including a gas card to help him commute for his new job. He's wearing a black Puma track jacket and jeans.

This story of hope comes from our Connecting Communities office in Beaverton - the star of this success story is Norberto. Norberto was referred to us through the Department of Human Services (DHS) self-sufficiency office. He had previously worked in building maintenance for more than 5 years, until he was injured on the job, leaving him unable to lift enough weight repetitively to return to his old line of work. It was time for something new, but he wasn't sure what would come next.

Value-Focused Career Exploration

We did career exploration and looked at many different pathways that Norberto could go down to further his career. Norberto ultimately kept coming back to the idea of working for himself, because he is a busy father of both biological and foster children. This created a high value on schedule flexibility for Nortberto, creating another challenging barrier in his career search.

Finding the Perfect Balance for Family

We looked at a lot of career options that could potentially fit Norberto's desires, but the simplest option seemed to be the best fit! We assisted Norberto in applying to work for home-delivery and ride share apps to create the flexibility he needed. Initially, he thought he limited English skills might stand in his way for this career choice; but after some vocational English lessons and a little tech support, Norberto was accepted and started driving for DoorDash.
We are so happy that Norberto is able to start working again for a job that isn’t going to harm his body or stand in the way of spending time with his family. Keep it up Norberto!
