Michael P. is a United States Marine Corps Veteran who proudly deployed to Desert Storm/Desert Shield where he was trained as an Organizational Automotive Mechanic and Aviation Ordnance Munitions Technician. After being honorably discharged from the Marine Corps, Michael suffered from severe PTSD for many years. He reported himself as feeling lost and turning to alcohol. With the help of a friend, Michael was able to get himself back on his feet. He started working, fell in love, got married, and had two children. Michael used the mechanical expertise he learned in the Marine Corps to work as a mechanic, service advisor and brake press operator, and he felt as though life was going well.

In Need of a Helping Hand

In 2018 Michael’s youngest son was in an accident that required intense surgery and years of rehab which was very difficult for both Michael and his wife. In February 2020, Michael’s relationship with his wife began to decline and after months of struggling, in June 2020 he and his wife separated. Unfortunately, that same month Michael also lost his job, re-triggering his prior feelings of being lost and depressed. Soon Michael and his son became homeless, losing everything including their vehicle.

Feeling Discouraged, But Not Giving Up

Though Michael states that he struggled to initially ask for help, in September 2020 he enrolled with Easterseals Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) and Homeless Veteran Rehabilitation Program (HVRP). He and his son were placed into temporary housing and he became employed quickly, though only remained at his position for a few weeks. During this time Michael’s depression intensified as he continued to care for his son while processing all his losses throughout the year, describing himself as feeling at “rock bottom” at this time. Though Michael continued to receive HVRP services, he expressed frustration with the lack of opportunities that were available to him, appearing discouraged by the wages that were lower than he had previously been paid ($18/hour) for the same type of positions.

Finding Confidence in the Present and the Future

In December 2020 Michael moved into permanent housing with the assistance of SSVF. He found a home which he felt was a fresh start. With his new apartment, Michael knew the importance of securing a job to pay his rent, and he became more open to applying for positions with lower starting wages. Michael was referred to Opti Staffing and an interview was quickly set up. Throughout this process, Michael spoke with his employment specialist about his desire to continue to make a higher wage; and shortly after his interview, Michael received an offer through Opti Staffing to work as a Brake Press Operator for Layton Manufacturing, making $20/hour! Michael was overjoyed with the position and the opportunity to work again, allowing himself the opportunity to care for himself and his son. With Michael’s first paycheck he was able to purchase an inexpensive vehicle and he reports feeling confident about the future, noting that he no longer feels the need to worry about not making the rent or becoming homeless again. Michael has expressed his deep appreciation for the help and encouragement that was continually provided to him via Easterseals’ HVRP and SSVF programs.

We are so proud of the great strides Michael has made in the pursuit of a new start for himself and for his son. Way to go Michael!
