Post-Incarceration Employment - Luis P's Story

Luis served as an Aviation Operations Specialist with the United States Army before being honorably discharged and settling down in Springfield, Oregon. He was referred to us while he was living in transitional housing through St. Vincent de Paul’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program. Luis carried multiple significant barriers to securing employment, including being recently incarcerated and without permanent housing, but he remained determined to reach his career goals.

After trying multiple support services following his two incarcerations, Luis was hesitant to enroll in another program. When he joined, he was living with a partner in an unhealthy situation that was detrimental to his recovery from alcohol abuse. Additionally, due to the felony conviction on his record, locating sustainable employment was very difficult.

Setting New Goals

Once Luis enrolled in the Easterseals Homeless Veterans Rehabilitation Program and began working with his Employment Specialist, we quickly made great progress toward his career objectives. He collaborated with the team to determine his ideal career path and create an actionable plan. Luis reported that the Veteran’s Employment Services offered through Easterseals Oregon were far more beneficial than he had anticipated, and they were less controlling than programs from his past experience. He worked with our Employment Specialist and Developer to create a new resume, understand the interview process, and build confidence in his professional presentation.

Luis’s ultimate goal was to find a career where he could support people who were struggling after incarceration, as he wanted to use his experience to mentor and aid others. After a month of working with Easterseals, an On-Call Resident Night Manager position opened up at Sponsors, an organization dedicated to supporting recently-incarcerated individuals.

Conclusion

Luis secured the job, and within a few weeks, he was offered the full-time Resident Night Manager role earning $12.00 per hour. Since joining our program, Luis has moved out of his unhealthy living situation and into a new residence. He is enthusiastic about his new career and grateful for the opportunity to give back to those who have helped him. He is thriving as the Resident Night Manager at Sponsors, where he uses the experience he earned securing employment after incarceration and achieving a five-year record of sobriety, to inspire and guide those around him.

We're so glad to see your experience turn into an opportunity to help others, Luis - great work!
