Introduction

Meet Connecting Communities participant Luis O. Luis is a hands-on kind of guy, and he has years of maintenance experience. His most recent experience (prior to his move to Oregon) is as a long-term maintenance technician at an apartment complex in San Mateo, California.
Luis and his family have been in the Portland area for about a year now. His parents have lived here for 12 years, so he is excited to be closer to them. Luis and his parents are originally from Mexico, but he has spent half of his life in California, primarily in the beautiful Santa Cruz and San Jose areas. He misses the majesty of northern California’s nature. He does not, however, miss the California traffic.
Luis and his wife, Maria, have three young children. The kids have really enjoyed the move to Oregon, and they love all the nature nearby. They especially like the snow, and having it within an hour’s drive of the house means spontaneous road trips. As a crew, the family enjoys hiking and exploring, especially Mt. Hood and the local waterfalls.

Coming to Easterseals Oregon

Unfortunately, Luis' search for work proved to be a less-enjoyable adventure as he started to feel the pressure building during his job-search. Luis found that there were jobs available, but he was struggling to find a position that fit into his desired career path. He envisioned something that was related to his field as a maintenance technician that would allow him to learn and grow within a company. Luis was immediately open to working with our Employment Specialist, Sheila, doing mock interviews and talking about things like motivation and displaying his most authentic self to others during an interview. They also talked about how to find out more about company culture, and how to use that to help influence the steps in his job search.

Getting Back on the Path to Success

With the new skills he'd been building, Luis started applying for higher quality jobs that were closer to his ideal career; and to make things more exciting, he started getting interviews very quickly. This had an immediate, positive effect on his attitude and his mood. For the first time in a while, Luis started believing that the job he was looking for was out there, and he became even more committed to the process of building the next step in his career.
Luis says that Connecting Communities has been there for him since Day 1, and he really appreciates all the help he’s received from us. He said he felt real support from Yanet (our Workforce Business Liaison) in his job search. Janet posted Luis' resume on Indeed.com and made it public so employers could view it. She also helped him apply for positions in which he had an interest, and she made sure to be available as often as possible. Our Administrative Assistant, Marilyn was also a great help to Luis by facilitating his eligibility for a grant that paid his December rent – a real boon, he said, especially during the Christmas season before he was working.

A Diamond in the Rough

Luis stated: “honestly, you guys are the best...everything has been so positive and helpful. Even with pandemic, the office being closed - the communication was there and consistent.” Luis said he’s never been through a program like ours to get help looking for work. It was a different experience for him, he said, “I never lost faith and courage,” because of the support he got from us. “There were days when I was looking for a job and I got discouraged, but you were there.” Luis said he would text Yanet to hear a friendly voice and update her on what was going on, and she always replied and asked, “How can I help?” Having that underpinning changed his job search experience.
Luis feels that we really focused on what he knows, what he is able to do, and what he did as a Facilities Technician.  That focus led him to the right job - the perfect job - the one he was looking for. Now he is in a place where he can succeed and grow while providing for the needs of his family. The excitement is written all over his face. He says he feels incredibly positive in this amazing new opportunity with a great company!
Luis was brought into Element Six through one of its contractors, and he is currently hoping to become a direct employee of Element Six. They produce (among other things) synthetic diamonds. It’s a complicated, high-security industry, and Luis plays a key role in monitoring their systems. He ran the gauntlet with three interviews, each succeeding interview feeling better than the one before it. Naturally, Luis was ecstatic when he was offered the position. He’s excited about the work and the reception he’s received. In the most recent update from Luis's employer, we were told that things are going very well!

Just before Valentine's Day, Luis received a text from Element Six, saying that they have a gift for everyone: a half-carat diamond. I bet you can guess what his wife, Maria got for Valentine's Day!
