Kevin's Connecting Communities Journey

Connecting Communities Participant, Kevin. He is standing in the dining are at his work: The Old Spaghetti Factory. He's wearing his all-black uniform, which includes an apron and a hat. He's smiling and facing the camera.

This success story comes from our Connecting Communities program which helps people with disabilities and language barriers develop employment skills and seek employment. The star of this week’s story is participant Kevin. Kevin has been a joy to work with and have in our office, and he is always smiling, laughing, and very motivated to find work and grow. Kevin came to our program because the stigma around his developmental disability and autism spectrum disorder was becoming a barrier to employment without some helpful guidance.

Assistance Provided

We started working with Kevin in the early spring, and we began by building a portfolio, creating a resume and practicing mock interviews to help build confidence and preparation. We also filmed and created a video resume for Kevin to show off his skills that might not be captured on a paper resume to employers. After we had built our portfolio, Dayana, our Workforce Business Liaison, started taking Kevin to job sites and businesses to see what type of working environments Kevin responded to and was interested in applying for. They applied for several jobs, and when selected for interviews would prepare before the interview and review after the interview what had went well and wrong and how they could improve for next time.

Hard Work Pays Off!

After several months of hard, dedicated work, Kevin was offered a position in the kitchen, at the Old Spaghetti Factory. Kevin had been looking for a position in a social space where he could be a part of a team and work with his hands in an environment that was exciting and engaging for him.
Kevin has inspired everyone in our office, and he reinforced our beliefs in what we do and why we do it. Our team continued to provide Kevin job coaching as he began his new journey at the Old Spaghetti Factory, and we were honored to be a part of his journey. We can’t wait to see everything he is going to accomplish!

Cheers to your success and your hard work, Kevin!
