Elijah's Journey (Part 1)

Supportive Services for Veteran Families program participant Elijah Morris. He is standing in his new apartment, wearing a mask, pajama pants, and a sweatshirt. He is standing near his collection of homegoods provided by the Homes for Heroes Foundation.

Elijah M., an Army Veteran, was kicked out of the home where he was living, and he went to stay at the Wy’East Do Good Shelter. When his back was against the wall and he was facing the potential of living on the street, Elijah turned to the Easterseals Oregon Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program for assistance with regaining permanent housing. He officially enrolled in our program on 9/1/2020, just before the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States.

A Speedy Turn-Around

Just one day after Elijah enrolled in our program, we paid for him to stay in a motel, starting on 9/2/2020 so we could turn the focus to his search for permanent housing. After spending some time helping Elijah search for the appropriate home for his new beginning, he signed a lease for a 1-bedroom apartment at the Yards at Union Station apartments. Elijah was also provided with a Homes for Heroes Welcome Home Kit, which included a vacuum cleaner, cookware set, coffee maker, glasses, dishes, silverware, silverware holder, utensils, dishtowels, oven mitts, towels, hand towels, washcloths, blanket, shower curtain and rings, toilet brush, hangers, laundry basket, and laundry detergent.

Thank You and Next Steps

Elijah stated that he was very grateful for the help from Easterseals Oregon and the Homes For Heroes foundation, saying “you changed my life – thank you!” After getting him set up with permanent housing, a welcome home kit, and some financial assistance along the way, we transitioned Elijah to our Homeless Veteran Reintegration Program (HVRP) to provide employment assistance.
