Constructing the Complete Solution - Daniel's Success Story

HVRP Participant, Daniel. He is at work, as a construction manager. He os wearing a baseball cap, sunglasses, and a black t-shirt. He is standing on a ladder, and working on a cross-beam above his head.

Daniel is a US Army Veteran who was discharged from service in 1976. Some time later, Daniel was incarcerated, and he was released on parole. Daniel most recently served a forty-month sentence (due to a violation of his parole). After being released from incarceration, Daniel found that it was nearly impossible to find gainful employment and stable housing. This led him to enrolling in our Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, to seek housing assistance; and from there, he was referred to our other Veteran-centered program: the Homeless Veteran Reintegration Program (HVRP), for employment assistance.

Employable Skills Blocked By Barriers

Upon enrolling with HVRP, Daniel was confident that he would be able to quickly find employment, due to his extensive background in construction and drywall; however, despite having attended multiple interviews pre-enrollment, he was not receiving job offers. Daniel noted that this was due to a lack of appropriate clothing and necessary tools.

Breaking Those Barriers Down

Our HVRP team assisted Daniel with interview clothing and locating an OSHA supervisor training; and at his next interview, he received a job offer! His new employer was particularly interested in the OSHA training he was beginning to take, and they stated that Daniel may be able to move into a supervisor position with it.

A Complete Solution, Powered by Partnerships

At the same time that he was beginning employment, Daniel was also housed by our SSVF program, provided furniture by our partners at Honoring Heroes, and provided a move-in box from the Salem Elks Lodge (move-in boxes contain necessities like silverware, toiletries, dishes, etc.). This only left a need for proper tools for his new construction job; and after Daniel’s new employer provided a list, our HVRP team was able to provide the necessary tools for his new position.

Daniel is currently working at Commercial Construction Solutions, LLC, where he is making $20/hour and has already been promoted to supervisor. Additionally, Daniel has been provided a company vehicle, empowering him to travel throughout the state to different job sites. Daniel has repeatedly stated that he loves his job, and our team is elated that we were able to help him get back on his feet!

Daniel's Story, in His Own Words

"My name is Daniel A. I was brought here to Oregon on a Probation Violation. I didn't know anyone. I had no job. I was also having problems getting my Social Security Income. I was told about the Easterseals program where I met Roy McClain. He immediately enrolled me in the Supportive Services for Veteran Families. I was introduced to their Housing Specialist, April R. and Jennifer O., the Employment Specialist. The ladies that work at the front desk are very courteous and greet you with a smile. Because of these people at Easterseals, I was able get a place to live, get a new job that pays me well, and get the tools to be able to maintain my employment. If there is any Veteran out there that needs assistance, they need to please reach out to these fine people. I can't thank enough for the assistance of Easterseals Oregon for their help."
