A Home Run for Jorge

About Jorge C.

Jorge is a sports enthusiast who used to work at a soccer stadium in Peru, where he used to help operate the ticketing and check-in process. He loves to talk to people, and he’s a very social person. Jorge was referred to the Easterseals Oregon Connecting Communities program by staff at Vocational Rehabilitation, and he came to us with hopes to find a new job related to his interest and experience with sports. Jorge also came with hopes to improve upon his English skills, interviewing skills, and knowledge of American culture.

Early Steps

Jorge started his journey with our Connecting Communities program by participating in our ESL (English as a Second Language) classes and computer classes. He enjoyed the classes, was very friendly to everyone, and constantly engaged with the group. Jorge has continuously worked hard, improving his conversational skills and thriving in the area of reading and writing. He has also participated in job preparedness workshops, and classes on the following subjects: applying for jobs, making resumes, interviewing, American working culture, communication, critical thinking, professionalism, enthusiasm, problem solving, and goal-setting.

The Road to Success

While Jorge was working with our program, our staff spent some time seeking job opportunities that would fit within Jorge’s abilities and desires surrounding sports. In time, the perfect opportunity for Jorge presented itself: openings for multiple positions at the Eugene Emeralds baseball stadium - PK Park in Eugene - became available. This meant Jorge was able to interview for a position that fit his experience as well as his personal and professional interests. Jorge was interviewed for a position working as a “Tunnel Attendant,” where he’d greet players and staff as they enter or exit the player’s tunnel, check credentials, and keep unauthorized people from entering. Jorge’s love for baseball made this a naturally exciting opportunity. Our staff was able to help Jorge prepare for the interview and to navigate the process of employment at the PK Park Emeralds Stadium.

As a result of all of the hard work and determination that Jorge brought to the table while working with our staff, he was offered a position doing what he loves, in an industry where he has past experience. Our staff was also able to help secure some job coaching and flexibility in the job description for Jorge along the way. Jorge has received ongoing support from our staff, as we have been able to visit his worksite to make sure he has all that he needs to be truly successful. Ultimately, we are extremely proud of Jorge, and he is very happy with his job at PK Park/The Emeralds Stadium. Great work, Jorge!
