A Joy to Have on Our Team - Magdalena P.

Connecting Communities Staff Member Magdalena P., holding a gift while smiling and sitting at her desk.

Introduction

We would like to celebrate the success and hard work of Magdalena P in our office. Magdalena had been working in our office as an office assistant until the Covid-19 freeze in Lane County. Magdalena has made a huge contribution to our office, and we’d like to commemorate the work she has done. She is an active part of 2 of our programs: a participant in the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) and a staff member of the Connecting Communities Program.

Joining the Easterseals Team

Magdalena first joined our team as an applicant through the SCSEP program. She was looking to get more office experience and also loved the idea of training with an organization like our Connecting Communities Program. Magdalena speaks Spanish fluently, and she has worked in job development in years past, in California. She had been out of the workforce for a while as she took care of a sick family member, but she wanted to get back into the workforce and gain more skills. She was excited to work with the Latinx population and get to aid those who need assistance in Spanish. Magdalena interviewed to train as an office assistant, and did very well in the interview. Easterseals Oregon began serving as a host agency for the SCSEP program, and Magdalena became part of our team.

Contrubutions Around Every Corner

Just as soon as Magdalena joined the team, we were able to put her to work.  Magdalena was able to participate in the English as a Second Language classes and group computer classes, and she could aid in classes with students who were struggling a little.  Magdalena also began to assist some individuals with studying for the driver’s knowledge test in Spanish.  She worked closely with instructor Jon and they devised a plan and a curriculum to aid those with the goal of passing the driver’s knowledge tests.  Magdalena did a great job with the students, and quickly gained good rapport with all she worked with.  The students she worked with were able to pass the driver’s knowledge tests with flying colors!
Magdalena also helped the office with outreach and met with Job Developer Alex to plan and strategize to reach more businesses and to form more partnerships in the community.  After mapping out certain groups to contact and share information, Magdalena worked hard to reach out to companies around Eugene/ Springfield and spread the word about our program, forming new relationships in the community.

Student Becomes the Teacher

Magdalena also participated in all of our workshops and assisted in providing workshops for clients.  She was trained by instructor Jon to conduct interviews, and she learned the curriculum to help prepare some other clients to get ready for interviewing. She also participated in our National Disabilities Institute trainings and was the recipient of a laptop computer as part of the program.  She worked on training on her computer skills and improved her knowledge of using Microsoft Office programs and typing skills.
Magdalena helped our staff member, Rosi with some of the office work, organizing files, and making sure all the files were in order.  She also helped cover the front desk, answer phones, and assist clients with their needs and questions over the phone. She's provided valuable help for our staff and our clients at every opportunity.

A Hopeful Future

Magdalena is now working from home and has been working hard to find long-term employment.  She recently got certified as a translator for English/Spanish, and has been applying and preparing for interviews. She's hoping to work somewhere she can utilize her office and translation skills. Recently Magdalena applied for an On-Call Job Coaching position with the Connecting Communities Program.  We know she would make a great coach and would also be able to utilize her Spanish and teaching skills.
We are wishing Magdalena the best, and we are grateful for the wonderful assistance she provided in our office for our team and the participants. We are also grateful for the wonderful partnership between the SCSEP program and Connecting Communities Program.
Thank you Magdalena for the success you helped facilitate in our office. We are wishing you the best in future employment opportunities.
