Stepping Stones Positive Parenting Program Begins

Parent Support and Training at Easter Seals has started the first Stepping Stones Positive Parenting Program in Austin!

Austin, TX, February 4, 2016

Every parent has days when he or she feels overwhelmed. From simple everyday disagreements to full-blown meltdowns, children’s moods and behaviors can often swing wildly, leaving parents stressed and frustrated.

For families of children with special needs, these days can occur with an exhausting regularity, and studies have shown that children with disabilities are more than three times as likely to be maltreated or abused when compared to their typically developing peers.

In collaboration with Project HOPES, Easter Seals is proud to be bringing the Stepping Stones curriculum of the Positive Parenting Program (Triple P) to Austin families. Project HOPES (Healthy Outcomes through Prevention and Early Support) is a collaboration of four local community organizations (Any Baby Can, Strong Start, Safe Place, and Easter Seals Central Texas) who provide support services to help strengthen families with young children. As part of Project HOPES, Easter Seals is the only provider of the Stepping Stones Triple P, with the first group of classes beginning February 3, with five parents participating.

Triple P is an evidence-based training curriculum that gives parents simple and easy-to-use strategies so they can more confidently manage their children’s behavior. Empowering themselves with tools to react in a constructive way, parents are able to create a structured and positive environment for everyone in the home.

The five principles of Triple P are:

  • Developing a safe and age-appropriate environment
  • Positive learning
  • Discipline with clearly understood boundaries and rules
  • Parents keeping reasonable expectations of their children
  • Parents taking care of themselves

Triple P is currently used in 25 countries and has been shown to work across all types of cultures, across socio-economics statuses, and in many different kinds of family structures.

The Triple P Stepping Stones curriculum has a unique design which offers extra support and strategies to meet the needs of families of children with disabilities. As the only provider of Stepping Stones Triple P in Austin, Easter Seals Central Texas is committed to strengthening families, improving quality of life, and building lifelong relationship skill for these families.

“We are so excited to bring this Stepping Stones program to the Austin area,” says Shalyn Bravens, LMSW, the Parent Support and Training Program Manager. “Triple P Stepping Stones is the Easter Seals mission in action. By providing these parents support before problems occur, we can reduce abuse, stress, and frustration, and provide a better quality of life for the entire family.”

The program is free to all parents of children under five with special needs in Travis and Williamson Counties, and complementary child care is available during the trainings. Currently hosted at the Easter Seals offices at 8505 Cross Park Drive, Austin, TX, 78758, Easter Seals can also host groups at other locations. If your church, school, or other organization is interested in hearing more, please contact Easter Seals at info@eastersealstx.org
