New Beginnings

Mission

The mission of the New Beginnings Program is to empower individuals with disabilities to become productive employable adults by providing comprehensive personal, social and behavioral adjustment training.

Overview

The New Beginnings Program at Easter Seals is a comprehensive Personal and Social Adjustment Program for adults with disabilities.  The program addresses behavioral issues that impair an individual’s ability to obtain and maintain employment.  Program objectives include improving coping skills, communication skills, and appropriate behaviors for the workplace.  We work with customers with various disabilities including Major Depression, Anxiety Disorders, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The goal of New Beginningsis to empower customers to achieve greater independence through stable employment.  Our curriculum includes:

  • Problem solving/Decision making (life skills)
  • Anger Management/Stress management
  • Self Esteem
  • Social skills/Small Talk
  • Boundaries
  • Communication/Assertiveness/Body language
  • Flexibility/Perception/Attitude
  • Disability Awareness/Limitations
  • Vocational Exploration
  • Developing hard and soft skills for the workplace

Phase I

Phase I is an evaluative period in which the customers are expected to demonstrate good attendance, punctuality, appearance appropriate to the job setting, and the ability to communicate effectively with staff and peers.

Phase II

Phase II involves understanding basic problem solving, following directions, working independently, understanding personal and social implications of work, adapting to changing situations, learning basic planning, organizing, and budgeting skills, and demonstrating the ability to set personal goals.

Phase III

Phase III is the Job Placement Component of our program.  It helps consumers develop realistic occupational goals, learn to present themselves positively during an interview, conduct job searches, arrange job interviews, and obtain information regarding past work experiences, education, training, and personal references.  In this phase, customers seek paid employment. The Job Placement Specialist will assist the individual in developing an individual vocational plan. The goal is for customers to identify appropriate job availability, obtain documentation for job placement, participate in job interviews, successfully complete a job trial designed by staff, secure employment, and communicate problems/progress at the employment site.

We provide “wrap around services” and will do whatever it takes to help an individual become a successful employee. The individual will be followed on the job for the first year and may return to any staff member for assistance during that time.

History

In 1989 the New Beginnings program was started with a grant from the Texas Rehabilitation Commission, now known as the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Vocational Rehabilitations Services.  It was developed to fill and address a gap in community resources for a traditionally underserved population and designed to serve those with significant mental health issues.

The program is unique in that people from all walks of life, ages, and goals come together and work to improve the quality of their lives. The skills they learn are ones they can use not only in a job setting but in any life setting.

Over the years this program has grown and evolved from a single staff member working with 8-10 participants to a staff of 6 dedicated individuals. What was originally designed to serve only adults referred by the state, since 2009, we have also expanded our program to include services to high school students through our Summer Transition Program.
