Caregiving, Early Intervention, and the Joy of Raising Quadruplets

When Amanda Corcoran gathered her four children, Harrison, Lila, Preston, and Jackson, on the couch to watch How Caregiving Connects Us All, she knew what was coming. Her children did not.

What is it like to be a caregiver for children with disabilities?

Before her children arrived, Amanda had already made a promise to herself that if she was blessed to become a parent, her love for them would be unwavering through every challenge and every milestone. Because she and Kyle were told pregnancy might be difficult, discovering they were expecting felt extraordinary. Then, during a lengthy ultrasound, they discovered there was not one heartbeat, but four. Years later, Amanda looks back on that moment with deep gratitude. “The fact that we have four happy, healthy nine-year-old children…that is baseline,” Amanda says. “Everything else in our lives, we can tackle. We are just beyond grateful that they’re all here, happy and healthy. That’s more than we can ask for.” The diagnoses, therapies, and complex systems came later; the love arrived first.

On a typical morning, Amanda doesn’t reach for medical terms to describe life; she reaches for movies. “It looks like the opening scene of Home Alone” she laughs; everyone rushing, grabbing devices and backpacks, ticking off therapy goals and school plans. She and Kyle each head out with two children, while her mom quietly supports with calls and dropped-off laundry. Thinking about the extra work in Harrison’s speech therapy, Amanda often reminds her kids, “You already worked a full day,” holding space for rest and joy at home. Caregiving is woven into every part of their day, but it is not the only thing that defines them.

Accessing Services Across a Lifetime

For Amanda and her family, accessing services has never been simple. Living in a more suburban area, she saw how geography became a barrier to in-person support, even as she chose to drive long distances to reach what her children needed. Those miles were more than transportation; they were a commitment to finding the right help. She acknowledged that not every family can commute in that way.

Because of the quadruplets’ gestational age, the family received in-home Early Steps services and support in an inclusive preschool, building a foundation she believes changed everything. “If we didn’t have access to early intervention,” Amanda says, “I don’t think I would be able to sit around the couch watching the documentary and hear them articulate themselves, regulate themselves, and understand and communicate with each other.”

Jackson was the initial reason they found Easterseals; Harrison later began therapies there, and Amanda brought Lila through the diagnostic clinic when her “mom gut” noticed social awkwardness that can look different in girls. She knows parents and caregivers can move through uncertainty before and after a diagnosis, which is why she emphasizes stories like hers, to help other families recognize possibilities while remembering that no two people are the same.

Her advice to other caregivers is simple: listen to your gut. If something feels like it doesn’t match your child’s needs, make the call. For Amanda’s family, those early years of support created a foundation for how her children communicate, connect, and grow today.

Joy, identity, and Caregiving Together

Conversations about disability often focus on what is hard, but Amanda refuses to let that be the whole story. She is quick to point out that her children are full individuals. Joy shows up in everyday milestones: preschool graduation, where all four kids crossed the stage together; when Easterseals staff calls her in excitement to talk about progress; or when Jackson uses his AAC device to tell her he loves her. Many parents of children who are nonverbal fear they will never share those words, yet moments like these reshape how her family understands communication, connection, and care. On trips to Disney, her children quietly model how to treat families with disabilities as they encounter other visitors, showing what inclusion and safety can look like in real time.

Amanda’s hope is simple and profound: communities that welcome families like hers, so caregiving is shared, not carried alone. Her message to the wider community is firm and hopeful. Don’t push families like hers away or ask them to stay home; bring them into the community, accept them, include them, and recognize that their experiences are different and nothing less. Amanda’s story is one reminder that caregiving is both deeply personal and profoundly communal.
