Meet Alexandria

An Easter Seals Story of Overcoming Challenges and Defying the Odds

Ken and Melanie never would have imagined Easter Seals would be such an important part of their family.  What they thought was going to be a fairly normal doctor's visit for their daughter, Alexandria, changed their lives forever.

Alexandria was diagnosed with a rare chromosome abnormality called Trisomy 9p syndrome seven days after the appointment.

They were told Trisomy 9p syndrome would cause extreme developmental delays and a weakened immune system.  The doctor also told Ken and Melanie families who have children with special needs face difficulties such as financial struggles because of medical expenses and that the divorce rate was high among couple caring for a child with disabilities.

Alexandria's parents were absolutely devastated.  It was not long after the diagnosis that Alexandria's mom called Easter Seals and spoke to the parent coordinator.  "As I was talking with her and asking many questions, she told me she too had a child with special needs.  That was very comforting to me because she knew exactly what I was going through," says Melanie.

Today, Alexandria receives occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy and child development services through Easter Seals. And she continues to meet many milestones and make a lot of progress.  She will turn three soon and continues to amaze those around her.  Alexandria is now walking, using sign language and feeding herself.  Her family was once told she would need to be fed through a feeding tube.

"Much has changed from the moment of finding out Alexandria has Trisomy 9p. What started out to be a devastating experience has truly been a blessing in our lives for many reasons and Easter Seals is definitely one of them," says Melanie. "Alexandria is truly a success story and we are thankful for Easter Seals' help to her and our entire family."
