Achieving Independence and Gaining Confidence in the Workforce - Natalie's Story

Workforce Development Building

Helping people with disabilities gain fulfilling, paid employment is not an easy task. Only 2 in 10 individuals with disabilities are in the labor force compared to 7 in 10 individuals without disabilities, according to a Department of Labor report in June 2014. At Easter Seals Washington, we are doing our best to beat these odds and help people with disabilities reach their employment goals.

Natalie Porter, a client at our Workforce Development center in Bremerton is one of our favorite success stories. Her progress since coming to Easter Seals Washington has been outstanding, and we would like to share it with you.

Natalie at Work

After graduating from high school, Natalie’s mother, Katherine, met with Easter Seals Washington staff and expressed the desire for her daughter to gain independence and feel satisfaction from contributing to her job in a meaningful way. Natalie entered our Individualized Employment program in September of 2010, where we paired her with one of our Employment Specialists, and they began working towards Natalie’s goal of finding and maintaining a skilled job. At the time, she had been volunteering at a local food bank. By helping identify interests, skill building, assisting with creating a resume, filling out job applications, and interview coaching, we were able to help Natalie get hired as a paid employee at the food bank where she is still working today.

“Working with Easter Seals has helped my daughter to succeed in being more independent in the workplace.  The Easter Seals staff saw potential for increased independence for Natalie at her job and they initiated a successful plan for her to accomplish that.” – Katherine Porter, Natalie’s Mother

Today, Natalie loves going to work. She has gained invaluable life skills and made friends which help her family feel more connected to their community. Looking forward, we only see more positive milestones for Natalie as she continues working and enjoying her independence.

At Easter Seals Washington, we understand that a suitable job for a person with a disability is the key to self-reliance and independence. Our program continually supports our participants by offering job coaching, transportation and career advancement opportunities. We also work with employers to ensure that the emphasis of their employability are their skills and not their disabilities. Click here to learn more about our Workforce Development program.
