Easterseals Arkansas, a trailblazing nonprofit dedicated to empowering individuals with disabilities, invites you to join us at the Palisades at Chenal Valley (1501 Rahling Road, Little Rock, 72223) for the Roommate Housing Program Ribbon Cutting and Open House on Friday, March 8, at 1 p.m. This momentous occasion will mark the formal celebration of our latest innovation in fostering independent living for adults with disabilities.

The Roommate Housing Program is a cutting-edge model designed to enhance the lives of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities by promoting greater independence within the community through shared living arrangements. The program utilizes a unique housing and matching process tailored for individuals receiving the Community and Employment Supports Waiver. By enabling like-minded individuals to find their ideal roommate based on common interests, the program employs a shared staffing model and smart home technology to ensure comprehensive support for each participant while fostering their independence. Having been meticulously developed over time, the Roommate Housing Program officially launched in October of 2023. Prospective residents are carefully matched with compatible roommates, a process facilitated through a thorough 41-question preference questionnaire — much like assessments used for pairing college freshmen in dorms.

To ensure compatibility, Easterseals hosts social outings and meetups for potential roommates and their families, fostering a supportive community before the commitment to shared living is made. Presently, seven adults are actively participating in this innovative approach to independent living, with plans for expansion to additional properties under way.

Easterseals collaborates with landlords to secure accessible housing in preferred community settings. Each residence accommodates two to four roommates, promoting shared expenses, technology, and staff resources.
Operating on a unique model tailored to the residents' needs, each roommate has an individual lease and is responsible for their share of rent, utilities, and household expenses. Depending on funding sources and landlord agreements, housing can also be adapted to meet accessibility and safety requirements.

The homes are equipped with state-of-the-art smart-home technology, including smart locks, thermostats, medication dispensers, and personalized apps for to-do lists and reminders. This technology is customized for each resident, facilitating greater independence in managing daily tasks. Additionally, remote monitoring technology, such as video doorbells, motion sensors, and stove sensors, ensures safety and security. With this advanced technology, one direct support professional can monitor up to ten homes simultaneously and can be reached by program participants through a portal device to address any real time support needs they might have. “We have been working on the Roommate Housing Program for the better part of four years,” Ron Ekstrand, CEO of Easterseals Arkansas shared. “While the pandemic caused some delays in our launch, this model has the ability to transform the way Waiver services are delivered by leveraging technology to increase independence and to reduce the need for staff at a time when the entire country is experiencing a shortage of direct care workers.”

The Roommate Housing Program Ribbon Cutting and Open House event will feature remarks from key Easterseals officials, roommate housing participants, and a special award presentation by CareSource, one of the managed care organizations that has directly helped support Easterseals efforts with a $150K grant to bring the smart-home technology vendor to Arkansas to implement that component of the Roommate Housing program.
