Genny Winter retired in 2018 after more than thirty-two years in the energy sector, having joined Shell Oil Company in 1986 directly from the University of Alabama, where she majored in mathematical statistics and minored in computer science. Throughout her career at Shell, she held a variety of technical, operational, and leadership roles across nearly every area of the business. Her primary focus was IT and computing, with a multi-year assignment in HR operational services. While many of her roles were global—with staff and client teams located in the Americas, Europe, and Asia—her main work locations were Houston and New Orleans. In December 2015, she began her final challenge with Shell as the vice president and chief information officer for Trading and Supply IT globally. In addition to her primary roles, she served as the executive sponsor for the Shell USA LGBT network and mentored many employees, both formally and informally. Although all thirty-two years were spent as a Shell employee, she enjoyed a remarkably diverse career across Shell’s domestic and international oil and gas disciplines.
Outside of Shell, Genny participates in various community and school-related activities and is a founding board member of the Gateway Academy, a Houston-based high school for children with learning disabilities established in 2005. She is currently the board chairman of the Gateway/Advance Board of Trustees. She has served on many other school and community nonprofit boards in a variety of capacities, including Easter Seals of Greater Houston, the Easterseals National Board—where she is now serving as board chair—the Louisiana Youth Seminar, and Incarnate Word Academy. She lives in Houston, Texas, with her husband, Tedd, also a Shell retiree, and has three grown children with whom they enjoy traveling and all types of outdoor activities.
