Washington, D.C. — Following the administration's announcement that the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) will be transferred from the U.S. Department of Education to the Department of Health and Human Services, and that the Office for Civil Rights will be moved to the Department of Justice, Kendra Davenport, President and CEO of Easterseals released the following is a statement:
“Today’s announcement to transfer the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) from the U.S. Department of Education to the Department of Health and Human Services, and the transferring the Office of Civil Rights to the Department of Justice, would do grave harm to children with disabilities, their families, and our communities.
At Easterseals, we witness firsthand how foundational education is to a life of independence, stability, and purpose. With the right support in our schools, children with disabilities develop the skills and confidence they need to thrive.
Moving the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) threatens the targeted, specialized support mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). It creates administrative chaos and undermines the seamless delivery of services to millions of students.
An effective education system requires federal oversight, with a clear focus on learning outcomes for every student. We believe that focus is best protected and strengthened within the Department of Education, which exists to serve the educational needs of all children.
We must remain vigilant in protecting the rights and opportunities of people with disabilities. Easterseals will continue to strongly advocate for policies that support children and adults with disabilities.”
