Washington, D.C. — On October 1, the federal government shifted a larger share of SNAP’s administrative costs onto states, putting immense pressure on providers and systems meant to feed people with disabilities, aging adults, and families already stretched thin. The following is a statement from Easterseals President and CEO Kendra Davenport.
"More than 5 million Americans have lost food assistance in just over a year. That is a staggering number, and behind it are real people being forced to make impossible choices about how to feed themselves and their families. Already, more than 5 million have lost assistance—and by shifting 25% more of SNAP’s administrative costs onto states, the federal government has placed an unavoidable strain on the systems working to keep people fed and healthy, threatening to push that total even higher.
When food assistance is scaled back, people with disabilities, aging adults, and working households are forced into impossible choices between groceries, medication, housing, and other basic necessities. This decision impacts people who already face significant, daily barriers, and these harmful cuts are making their lives even harder by stripping away support they depend on.
You cannot talk seriously about improving health, expanding opportunity, or supporting independent living while making it harder for millions of Americans to put food on the table.
And the worst may still be ahead. As additional SNAP restrictions take effect, more families face the prospect of losing critical assistance. This is a policy choice, and its consequences are becoming impossible to ignore. We urge policymakers to reverse course, protect access to food assistance and stop placing the burden of these decisions on the people who can least afford it. No American should go hungry because of decisions made in Washington."
