Another Brick in a Wall: Easterseals President & CEO Kendra Davenport Comments on Latest DoJ Actions

With the Department of Justice’s recent effort urging a pullback of long-standing regulations that require people with disabilities to receive care in the most integrated setting, advocates are bracing for more changes limiting access to home care and services for people with disabilities.

“This is another brick in a wall between people with disabilities and their ability to live independently in the communities they call home,” Kendra Davenport, president and CEO of Easterseals, told McKnight’s Home Care Daily Pulse. “For decades, federal disability protections have helped ensure that people can get the support they need at home and in their communities. What we are seeing now is a dangerous retreat from that commitment.

These latest actions do not erase the ADA, Section 504 or the Supreme Court’s Olmstead decision, but it is another step toward the federal government pulling back from its longstanding role in protecting community integration and enforcing a consistent baseline of disability rights across the country.”
