Feb. 6, 2023 — WHEELING, W.Va. — Jennifer Diserio has joined the Easterseals Rehabilitation Center’s medical team as a nurse practitioner specializing in developmental disorders, specifically autism and ADHD.

“We are seeing a sharp increase in referrals for autism screenings and treatment for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder,” Dr. Ellen Kitts, Easterseals medical director, said. “Jennifer has a wealth of experience in the field and will help us serve families in a more timely manner.”

A Wellsburg native, Diserio graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from West Virginia Wesleyan College and practiced at Wheeling Hospital before working in the Infant Surgical care unit at UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh Nurse Practitioner Program in 2003.

As a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Diserio has treated patients in the UPMC Department of Neurology and Department of Dermatology. She also has experience in private pediatric practice and, most recently, health insurance case management.

“I feel like I’m back in the place where I love to be, treating children with chronic needs. I have worked with many patients diagnosed with autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, ADHD, OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), Down syndrome and other developmental disorders,” Diserio said.

“The population I’m seeing primarily is patients with ADHD and autism. My goal is to use a multidisciplinary team approach to develop successful treatment plans that will help them reach their full potential in all areas of their lives.”

Diserio will see patients primarily at the Wheeling location, 1305 National Road, Wheeling, but also will travel to a newly opened office in Weirton.

Easterseals Rehabilitation Center marked its 85th anniversary in December. Formerly the Wheeling Society for Crippled Children, Easterseals has created life-changing solutions for tens of thousands of children with physical and developmental disabilities and their families.

In addition to medical care, Easterseals provides early intervention services, child development services, and outpatient speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy. Patients must be referred to Easterseals by their primary care physician. Easterseals accepts all insurance plans, and no one is turned away for inability to pay.
