We're Making Music at Olympic Peninsula Autism Center

A recent donation makes a big impact at OPAC

Musicians at OPAC

Thanks to a donation from Ted Brown Music in Silverdale, learners at Easterseals Olympic Peninsula Autism Center have become budding musicians! The donation of a microphone, mic stand, and speakers has led to music and singing from our clients and even our therapists. Better yet, aside from being a fun activity, our new microphone setup has had some big impacts on our clients’ therapy.

Here’s what Program Director, Jennifer Cleverdon, had to say about the new gear:

“Music can be both a calming and a motivating influence for our clients and the microphone has proven to be another tool to engage clients and keep them motivated. Here we don't perform 'music therapy' per se, but we do look for ways to use music/singing/sound as a reinforcer (an effective, scientifically proven behavioral intervention) to increase desired behavior. Singing into the microphone is a preferred activity – learners get to do it as a reward for being on task and meeting goals. What we are finding is that the very presence of the microphone encourages vocalization and impromptu singing – either with words or without. Anything that encourages speech, positive vocalization (singing, humming, reciting the alphabet or other things clients have saved to memory) is a winner for us!”

Thank you Ted Brown Music for this amazing donation!
