WHAT

Easter Seals (@Easter_Seals) is hosting a Twitter Q&A, "Everything You Want to Know about Disability Employment,” about disability employment in observance of National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

 

Participants are encouraged to ask their toughest questions about navigating the workforce with disabilities by using the hashtag #AskEasterSeals

 

Viewers can also join the conversation by sharing personal ideas and experiences about building a career, interviewing, and job search strategies.

WHO

Crystal L. Odom, Easter Seals’ resident employment expert and certified workforce development professional, will answer questions on behalf of the organization.

 

As an Assistant National Director at Easter Seals, Crystal works to increase training and employment opportunities for program participants on a national level. She also supports operations of national affiliate partners at Easter Seals Senior Community Services Employment Program administered by the Department of Labor.

 

Crystal’s background includes managing facilitating and training staff in the areas of Homeless Veterans Supported Employment (HVSEP) Program, Welfare to Work, Vocational Rehabilitation and Youth Adult and Senior programs relevant to serving people with disabilities.

WHY

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Easter Seals celebrates this milestone and the advancements of rights for people with disabilities over the last two decades, but knows there’s still work to be done.

 

The unemployment rate for people with disabilities is more than double the rate for people without disabilities (10.2% vs 5%, respectively). People with disabilities are actively seeking employment, they are qualified and valuable to the nation's workforce, and they want to work.

 

People with disabilities face a unique set of challenges when it comes to job searching and building a career. Through Easter Seals workforce programs, over 35,000 people with disabilities and other special needs overcame employment barriers.

 

Today, Easter Seals hopes to offer this type of support extending resources, advice, and expertise via social media.
