More than 30 children and their parents from Easter Seals Child Development Centers (CDC) in Upland and Ontario participated in “McDonald’s Family Mealtime Literacy Nights” to enhance parents’ awareness of and interest in their children’s early literacy development.
Literacy Nights take place once a week for four consecutive weeks at McDonald’s restaurants across Southern California and offer an educational program by a certified trainer with the National Center for Family Literacy, wrapped around the evening meal provided by McDonald’s. Each week covers a different topic including speech, math, science and storytelling.
Families received resource booklets, children’s books and flash cards containing strategies and content they can use to teach their children.
“The children really got excited about learning and eating at McDonald’s where they are served a nutritious dinner that included grilled chicken sandwiches and sliced apples. The National center for Family literacy gave a really great opportunity to not only teach the children, but teach parents how to teach their children,” says Upland Child Development Site Director Elizabeth Conrad.
