Babies Can't Wait

Servicing Gwinnett, Rockdale and Newton Counties

"Without the therapies, I would be lost. People always say that if you catch it early, therapy does wonders. We are the prime example of that because as soon as we saw the signs of autism we contacted Babies Can't Wait. They have given me wonderful tips on how to help her and I have watched her develop at a faster pace than before. I just want to hug the therapists. I know she will live a fulfilled life because of the things she's learned." - Babies Can't Wait mom (read her story here)

Getting started early is key

Early Intervention services help young children with disabilities achieve their goal in cognitive, social/emotional, communicative, adaptive and physical development. By providing screening, evaluation, and treatment for children with disabilities or who are at risk of developmental delay, plus education and support for their parents, family members, and caregivers we ensure that children with disabilities have increased independence and will be prepared to meet with success when they enter school. Treatment includes physical, occupational, speech therapy; special instruction and service coordination to children ages birth to three years.

WHAT: BABIES CAN'T WAIT (BCW) is Georgia's early intervention program for infants and toddlers with developmental delays and disabilities and their families. It is a federally mandated program under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which provides a framework for coordinating developmental, educational, and community supports within natural environments for children under three and their families.

BCW provides developmental evaluation, at no cost to the families, to determine whether children are eligible for the program due to developmental delays or disabilities.

WHO: Children ages 0-36 months with developmental delays, developmental disabilities, and/or certain diagnosed disabling conditions that have a high probability of resulting in delays are eligible to receive early intervention services.

HOW: The best time to refer is at the earliest sign of a delay. The brain develops most rapidly during the first three years of life, providing a brief window of opportunity to detect developmental delays in children and address them before they become barriers to healthy development.

Anyone can make a referral to BCW, including but not limited to social workers, physicians, parents, childcare providers, teachers, and other pediatric clinicians.
