It’s never too late to have your life completely changed for the better. At 65 years old, homeless and unemployed, Easter Seals NJ helped Eloisa do just that.
Eloisa, whose primary language is Spanish, had always desired to become fluent in English, and aspired to earn a certification in child care which she hoped would eventually lead to a full time job with health care benefits. However, being unemployed not only prevented her from achieving those goals, but the financial hardship actually caused her to become evicted and she found herself in a homeless shelter.
Fortunately, Eloisa was then referred to Easter Seals NJ’s SCSEP (Senior Community Support Employment Program) in Hudson County in January 2010.
Easter Seals NJ’s SCSEP staff worked with several county agencies – including the Jersey City Mayor’s office - to help her secure affordable housing. Then, Eloisa was placed in training at a child care facility and enrolled in ESL (English as a Second Language) classes. The staff also linked her with services for her to obtain eye glasses and health care through the Affordable Care Act.
Congratulations to Eloisa who, with the help of Easter Seals NJ, is now well on her way to a new life!
