Easterseals Michigan receives grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Flint

$25,000 to increase access to behavioral health services in schools

AUBURN HILLS, MICH (January 14, 2020) Easterseals Michigan has received a grant of $25,000 from the Community Foundation of Greater Flint to increase access to behavioral health services in schools to support students and families by having an integrated behavioral health clinician in the school. Easterseals is currently working with the Grand Blanc and Carman Ainsworth Schools with plans to expand to other schools in Genesee County.

In addition to having a staff member in schools, the Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS) program, a school-based, group, and individual intervention, will be run as part of this grant. CBITS is designed to reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and behavioral problems, and to improve functioning, grades, attendance, peer and parent support, and coping skills.

Access to services, transportation, and stigma are huge barriers to children and families in need of support. This grant will help us eliminate these,” says Katie Kogelmann, Easterseals Michigan Director of Genesee Family Services. “The school is a safe and familiar place for many children and families, so being able to provide services where they already are makes a big difference.”

“We have been serving the Flint area for 75 years and our commitment to Genesee County is as strong today as it was when we first opened our location in Flint,” says Brent Wirth, President and CEO of Easterseals Michigan. “This grant will allow us to continue what we started decades ago by addressing a need in the community with a solution that will provide a bright future for students and their families.”
