"Adam reassured me that I shouldn't feel guilty about receiving help.”

Sharon Hendrickson served in the United States military for 8 years, as an 88M motor transport operator. She was deployed to Kuwait/Iraq in 2010, where she was a gunner/driver, but at the end of her service Sharon was left with a debilitating back injury. She had filed a claim, but heard no response, when she was referred to the Easterseals Veterans Program by a local homeless shelter for Veterans.

Prior to coming to Easterseals, Sharon had struggled to adjust to “normal” life and was still not clear on what benefits were available to her, a struggle many female Veterans share. Only 20.1 percent of the female veteran population receives VA disability compensation, and only 7.4 percent are using their education benefits. Then she met Adam Costello, the Veterans Program Coordinator. “Adam reassured me that I shouldn’t feel guilty about receiving help,” she said. She found the process to be easy and hassle-free and was thrilled with the support she received, saying, “Before Easterseals Massachusetts, my 4 year old and I were walking to and from school and work in all types of weather after my truck broke down. Adam got us back on the road!”

With the support of Easterseals, Sharon now says she has hope for the future. “I have more hopes and goals than I can list,” she said, “But with reliable transportation I can go back to school and further my education to support my family.”
