Evansville native Mike Hudson lives a full, busy life in our community—when he’s not jet-setting to another part of the country on one of his many adventures!
Mike was diagnosed with a mild intellectual disability when he was young. He has lived on his own since 1991, assisted by the Easterseals Rehabilitation Center’s Community Living Services (CLS).
Mike loves to travel. He eagerly shares photos and stories of trips to New York, South Dakota, California, Washington D.C. and many other destinations. Mike’s future aspirations include a trip to Hawaii and writing a book about his travel experiences.
A 20-year employee of Schnucks, Mike walks to work. But he relies on Community Living Services for transportation to appointments, errands, help with bill-paying and insurance paperwork, cooking tips, and group social activities.
CLS staff also assist Mike in arranging his trips. Asked if he gets nervous traveling alone, Mike is quick to share his philosophy on the subject: “If you don’t get out there and try, you’ll never know what you’ll be able to do.”
Mike credits CLS with helping him reach goals for independence. “Things would be a lot different without them,” he says. “They help me in a lot of ways.”
Community Living Services are generally funded through the Indiana Medicaid Waiver. Support, training, and assistance may be provided for a few hours a day, a few days a week, or 24 hours a day, depending on each person’s Individual Support Plan.
