Easterseals Statement on Threats to Access to Healthcare

  • Easterseals is a national network of more than 70 leading nonprofit organizations that deliver local services that make it possible for individuals with disabilities, older adults, and other Americans to successfully participate in and contribute to their communities.

  • Access to health care is critical for all Americans, especially for individuals with disabilities and pre-existing conditions who were once subjected to health coverage denials or cost-prohibitive plans due to health status or a pre-existing condition, such as asthma, diabetes, or cancer.

  • Medicaid provides critical, often life-saving health care, long-term services, and community supports, such as early intervention services, autism services, attendant care, and home health, that help millions of children and adults with disabilities remain in their home and communities and live productive lives.

  • Easterseals is concerned by recent attempts to weaken health care protections and to restrict access to health care and essential community supports through repeal efforts, cap and cut proposals, and administrative actions related to the open enrollment period, risk adjustment program, essential health benefits, and pre-existing condition protections. Americans, including individuals with disabilities, need certainty that the pre-existing condition protections, annual and lifetime limit bans, and access to comprehensive health coverage and long-term care and supports will remain today and into the future.

  • Easterseals remains fully committed to preserving the protections and access to health care, benefits, and long-term supports available to individuals with disabilities and pre-existing conditions through Medicaid and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Public Law 111-148). We will strongly advocate for proposals and actions that improve the lives of individuals with disabilities and pre-existing conditions by increasing access to or funding for life-changing health care and community supports, including those available through Medicaid.

  • Easterseals will work to stop efforts to weaken or invalidate Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act protections or coverage guarantees or to cut, cap, or otherwise limit access to or the quality of Medicaid services and supports.

  • Easterseals urges policymakers to work together to strengthen and improve the protections, care, health benefits, and long-term supports available to Americans, including individuals with disabilities and pre-existing conditions, through current law and federal programs.
