Remco DeJong firmly believes in the mission of helping others break down barriers to employment. He first came to Easterseals as a Building Value store customer. When he learned of the deconstruction capabilities, he hired Building Value to take down his garage and salvage the wood and cabinets. In light of the current events, Remco chose to show his support again and made a gift. He is drawn to the mission of empowering people to reach their employment potential because he is passionate about providing new opportunities for others whenever possible.
Remco has always found fulfillment in work. Even as a young boy, he worked delivering newspapers and mowing lawns. In high school, he would ride his skateboard to work in a machine shop. He attributes his work ethic to his parents and the opportunities they provided. In fact, his family moved to the United States from Holland when Remco was eight, after his father accepted a job in the Geology Department at the University of Cincinnati.
“I like to work,” he shared. “It gives me the ability to express myself productively. Solving physical problems is a real rush. It’s a joy.” Remco, a self-subscribed jack of all trades, has also worked as a cabinet maker, a mechanical engineer, an IT designer, programmer, analyst, and adjunct professor.
When asked why he gives, he said, “I just think what you do is really good. I support the mission to give people opportunities, especially in the skilled trades.” Remco enjoys knowing his efforts help pave the way for others to find their #breakthroughmoments on the journey to employment.
