Easterseals celebrates National Apprenticeship Week

November 15-21, 2021 is National Apprenticeship Week, and Easterseals is celebrating by highlighting stories from our youth construction programs and holding events for our construction students.

One story is from our 2020 Brighter Futures Honoree, Alesha, who was recovering from health issues and looking for a career that would allow her to become more physically active and make a living wage. She learned about the Uptown Workforce Development Initiative (UWDI), a new program through Messer Construction and Easterseals, to provide on-the-job construction training on the site of the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Critical Care Building expansion. The grandmother of two always showed up on time and put in the hard work. Her attention to detail quickly caught the eye of her Easterseals job developers and Messer Construction. She was invited to play an important role of overseeing the “final clean,” the last step to make sure every detail is perfect before it is turned over to the client.

Alesha is now one of the top advocates in her community for others to find their place in the construction industry. She continues to speak to new participants in the Building Value program and takes participants in the UWDI program under her wing.

Additionally, Easterseals hosted several organizations this week to speak to our construction programs for National Apprenticeship Week! Our Level Up, FastTrac, and YouthBuild apprentices toured Cinfab's facilities, and learned about carpentry and masonry from Local Labor Union and solar energy from Sustainergy. Sustainergy offered two participants jobs on the spot!
Thanks to our staff, apprentices, and guests for a fantastic week.
