Positive Vibes Fall 2017

new campusBuilding a Healthier Tomorrow
Building a Healthier Tomorrow is our capital campaign at the Terrence J. Hancock Family Campus in Chicago.  We are proud to announce, we have officially broken ground!  As you may know, this vital facility/community resource has been a dream of ours for a number of years and we are excited that it is now coming to fruition.  Currently, we do not have on-campus opportunities for indoor fitness and recreation. The development of the facility provides students and adult clients at Easterseals with an avenue to build healthy lifestyle habits; learn new communication and social skills; and increase opportunities for community engagement.
new campus
Easterseals Academy purchases a new campus!
Easterseals Academy recently purchased a facility in Machesney Park. The acquisition of the 27,500 square-foot building, located on 19 acres, will accommodate our growth.
Easterseals Academy has grown from 34 students to 90 in just five years. The new campus in Machesney Park will feature a full-sized gym, stage, playground and additional areas for job and vocational training. Students will also be able to enroll in art classes and adapted physical education classes.
Easterseals empowers each student to achieve peak academic performance, increase social and vocational skills, develop and effective means of communication and foster the acquisition of functional life skills for independence in the community.

Abreu’s Amigos
Abreu's Amigos celebrated its third season. Chicago White Sox hitter Jose Abreu developed “Abreu’s Amigos”,  to share his passion for  students with special needs by providing opportunities to develop social skills.
Each year, students at Easterseals attend baseball games at Guaranteed Rate Field with their families for a once in a lifetime on-field experience with a professional baseball player. At the game, students interact with Jose Abreu and learn valuable life skills throughout the ballpark. Thank you to the Chicago White Sox and Jose Abreu for their continued support of Easterseals.

A Time For Giving Thanks
Our 2016 #GivingTuesday Campaign provided many opportunities to our programs throughout Easterseals. The Easterseals Academy in Tinley Park chose a greenhouse as their special #GivingTuesday project. All contributions raised on #GivingTuesday allowed the school to purchase a greenhouse for a year-round program.

All classrooms are able to experience hands-on from working outside in the greenhouse. Secondary and post-secondary classrooms now have the opportunity to utilize the greenhouse for vocational training and employment.

The garden/greenhouse is off to a great start this summer!  Everyone is excited to share our first harvest which was sold in our school store!  Everyone is also excited about fresh produce in the school store.  Teachers have been taking produce from the garden to use it during cooking classes. Classrooms have incorporated the garden into their life science unit with lessons on the plant cycle while utilizing their “root view” transparent growing box.  Students have been busy maintaining the garden each day to make it a huge success!
