Helping others during a natural disaster was awarded to Multi-Systemic Therapist, Max Sutton, of the Easterseals UCP Greenville office.
Multi-Systemic Therapy (MST) is a program designed for youth generally between the ages of 12 and 17 who have antisocial, aggressive/violent behaviors and are at risk of out-of-home placement due to delinquency; adjudicated youth returning from out-of-home placement; chronic or violent juvenile offenders; and/or youth with serious emotional disturbances or abusing substances and their families.
Therapist Max Sutton received the “Whatever It Takes” trophy for helping families she served during Hurricane Matthew. Max lost her house to a previous disaster, Hurricane Floyd, so when Hurricane Matthew headed her direction she took it very seriously. When asked about the award, Max provided this beautiful statement:
“Last year, when Hurricane Matthew started to approach, the police notified my neighbors and I we had to leave our homes within 48 hours. I was unable to go into the office. I was sad, anxious, angry -- and hurt. But I stayed in prayer and I realized that I was not the only person I began to focus all my energy on being positive and on the families I was unable to see due to the flood. The same flood was impacting my families, too. MST is about being there in a crisis and that’s what I wanted to do. So, even though I couldn’t physically go see them I started calling them every day to make sure they were okay. Despite the extended leave time I was given, I still had MST sessions and checked on my clients. I didn’t do it for acknowledgement or accolades. I did it because I needed to and because I realized it was not all about me. Being nominated and winning the Whatever It Takes Award was oddly humbling. It made me realize that others are watching even when you think they’re not. It made me realize that one person can really make a difference. And as a new MST therapist, it showed me what MST and Easterseals UCP are really about…. Truly helping people.”
