Music Therapist Inspires Preschoolers

Easterseals UCP Busy Beats Program Promotes Development

Salem, VA, May 28, 2018

Hope Key often has a song in her head and her five-string guitar nearby.  As a Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC), Hope has brought her love for music and teaching developmental skills to young little minds to Easterseals UCP through the creation of a developmental music group for preschoolers called Busy Beats.

hope keyOur Staff Spotlight highlights Hope this month.  She joined the Easterseals UCP Early Intervention Team in 2011 in Salem, Virginia as a service coordinator and case manager.  Soon after, Hope became the new leader of the preschool-aged playgroup.  She connected with children naturally and introduced music to the group.  In 2014, Busy Beats was created and has been blossoming at Easterseals UCP and at area schools.

Busy Beats is not just a music playgroup.  Before the program begins, each child is screened to see where they are in their development. Throughout the program, skills are tracked including social, cognitive, motor and language development. Hope incorporates appropriate curriculum as well as a fun, music enrichment environment.

“Hope is an indispensable part of the Early Childhood Outreach team her in the Salem office and offers a wonderful example of how the power of music has the ability to transform lives,” said Valerie Hughes, Early Intervention Program Manager at Easterseals UCP.

Valerie said it’s not uncommon for a parent to say their child learned a new word or a gained a new motor skill from the songs in the group.  Some of the preschoolers experience other firsts including being separated from their parent for an hour and making a friend.
