Since the fall of 2016, Easterseals UCP crisis response employees have been working through many challenging conditions including flooding to aide survivors in eastern and southern North Carolina. The mission of the federally funded grant program, HOPE4NC, was to assist individuals and communities recovering from the devastating impact of Hurricane Matthew by providing community-based outreach and psychoeducational services.

2017 hope4ncThe Hope4NC program was recognized by the NC Council of Community Programs at their annual state conference with the Crisis Response Program of Excellence award. This program was a collaborative effort between Eastpointe Managed Care Organization (MCO), Easterseals UCP and RHA Health Services to provide crisis counseling and assistance through counseling sessions in community-based settings such as libraries, churches and homes.

Nicole Bauer, Easterseals UCP Mental Health and Veterans Program Manager, said, “This team worked very hard and I’m so proud of the work they’ve done.  I was thrilled to see them recognized by the state.”

The model for Hope4NC was unique, as Easterseals UCP trained staff has consistently worked in these communities including Edgecombe, Lenoir, Sampson and Wayne counties.  This mission hit close to home for many of the counselors, as they were Hurricane Matthew survivors themselves. The grant for Hope4NC expires at the end of this year.

Easterseals UCP works side-by-side with adults and children who are managing disabilities and mental health challenges. We serve as a nurse, a therapist, a social worker, a job counselor, a teacher, a psychologist, a caregiver and a compassionate friend all rolled into one. Our purpose is to help neighbors in need achieve better days and live their best possible life.
