Young adults with the EMPOWER Afterschool Program and Adult Day Program at Easterseals UCP have a deep love for music. They wanted a professional DJ for the Valentine’s Dance called the Happy Hearts Dance this year, so they raised the money.
The EMPOWER (Engaging and Motivating People through Opportunities in Wellness, Education and Recreation) Program, sponsored by Trillium Health Resources is in 4 North Carolina locations. It’s a free program to individuals with a diagnosis of Intellectual and/or Developmental Disability.Typically developing siblings are welcome to attend.
Through a Valentine’s fundraiser, adult program participants baked and delivered over 500 cookies and personal messages that were ordered by people in the community. The funds paid for a DJ. One participant, Garrett, tried his hand at DJ’ing for a while and later showed off his dance moves. Garrett was also named Happy Hearts King for a 2nd year while Hope was crowned with a tiara as the Happy Hearts Queen.
“This was the best night of my life,” said Myles Jenkins, adult program participant. Staff was thrilled to see the high schoolers from the afterschool program and the adult program participants have so much fun dancing and socializing.ABOUT EASTERSEALS UCPEasterseals UCP works side-by-side with adults and children who are managing disabilities and mental health challenges.
