Flower Power for EMPOWER

BB&T Helps Plant the Seeds for a Better Future

Elizabeth City, NC, June 15, 2018

Community partnerships go a long way at Easterseals UCP.  Thanks to the BB&T branch in Elizabeth City, the site for EMPOWER (Engaging and Motivating People through Opportunities in Wellness, Education and Recreation) received a grant to improve the outdoor space.

EMPOWERThrough the BB&T Lighthouse Project grant, the EMPOWER site received $1,000 to make some big changes.  Recently, EMPOWER hosted a planting party and family cookout where parents, children, staff, and BB&T volunteers planted raised vegetable containers and fairy garden containers, painted a new storage shed, built a bird feeder ,and created an activity wall with chalkboard, thermometer and rain gauge.

FLOWER POWER 2 “We’re grateful to our partners, BB&T, for the donation. Also, parent participation is very important for the quality of the program, “ said Jen Scialdone, EMPOWER Director in Elizabeth City.  She went on to say, “Everyone had a great time.  We love the chance to spend time with the EMPOWER families as they are supportive and appreciative of what we do with the kids.”

The EMPOWER program offers afterschool and summer day camp in four North Carolina locations to children with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities.  The programs year-round are free and supported by Trillium Health Resources.
