Easterseals UCP School and Therapies Must Go On

Temporary Child Development Center Offers Continued Services

Wilmington, N.C., October 9, 2018

Typically the mall is where you shop til you drop but in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence, the mall has served an educational purpose. Easterseals UCP staff and volunteers converted a storefront into a unique and private temporary home for the Wilmington Child Development Center.

hurricane florenceMarcie said despite personal losses from the federal disaster, people came out to create a temporary school for children with developmental disabilities, special needs and mental health challenges.  Aside from teachers, staff and parents, the community got involved too including members of the Wilmington Community Support Group on Facebook and Smart Start volunteers.

Since October 2, children have been back in a routine of going to school and getting the therapeutic services they need while housed at the Independence Mall in Wilmington.  Meanwhile, parents can have some normalcy by returning to work and addressing the damage and loss to their homes.

“I am really speechless.  We did this!” said Marcie.  Learn more about Easterseals UCP Child Services.
