Easterseals UCP honors Charlie and Nancy Gaddy

Open House at new and improved Charlie Gaddy Children's Center

RALEIGH, N.C., July 27, 2016

Easterseals UCP honored Charlie and Nancy Gaddy on Tuesday afternoon, July 26 with an Open House at its Raleigh based developmental day center named for the former WRAL-TV News Anchor.

The Easterseals UCP Charlie Gaddy Children’s Center serves both children with disabilities and typical learners.  The Open House celebrated the newly renovated playground and classrooms made possible by gifts from Charlie’s many corporate and personal friends and family members including Capital Broadcasting Company, Gregory Poole Equipment and York Properties.  The ribbon cutting introduced three colorful age appropriate playground areas complete with new equipment, swings, and beautiful artificial turf.

One of the highlights of the afternoon was the ‘reveal’ of a popular, much-loved and well-worn playhouse donated by NetApp and Gaddy family members.  Over the past 6 weeks, York volunteers transformed the once simple faded playhouse into a clever fun-center named Charlie’s Pitstop: complete with drive though car wash, Gaddy garage, Charlie’s Diner, a child-size picnic table, York Security car and a Bloomsbury Landscape vehicle all resting on a beautiful section of artificial turf.  York Properties and Bloombury Lanscapes donated the Pitstop’s materials, and provided the artful creativity and labor in the hot summer sun.

Luanne Welch, Easterseals UCP CEO, described Charlie Gaddy as a kind, generous man who is an authentic joy to be around.   “Charlie Gaddy demonstrates the behaviors that Easterseals UCP values- accountability, commitment and caring.  He is accountable to his family, friends and community; he is committed to doing the right thing for the right reason all day every day; and Charlie cares about every human being he touches – throughout his TV career, and in his ‘retirement’ consulting, mentoring, and volunteering.  Charlie is a champion for children; especially our children with special needs.”
