For 25 years, the Association of People Supporting Employment (APSE) has played a critical role in establishing supported employment as the viable rehabilitative service for individuals with significant disabilities who have been unable to become employed in the workforce.
Bridget Hassan, the North Carolina President of APSE, has been tapped to sit on the National APSE Board. Bridget will continue to advocate and educate for individuals with disabilities, while continuing her work at Easter Seals UCP.
Bridget said, “Employment is for everyone. With the right supports and services everyone, regardless of abilities and disabilities, can work. Easter Seals UCP North Carolina & Virginia and APSE are working to ensure those services and supports are available. I am very lucky and privileged to work for a company who not only allows me to advocate for Employment For All, they make it part of my job. To have a job that allows me to do something that I am so passionate about makes this a dream job. “
She has worked in human services for almost 30 years, the last 20 years dedicated to community based, integrated employment. Bridget has helped to move facility-based services to community-based employment and has seen the impact of those efforts improve the lives of the people involved.
In North Carolina, Bridget’s goal is to increase awareness and promote Employment First's philosophy and practices. She serves on state-level committees to increase and improve employment outcomes for people with disabilities. For the last three years, Bridget has served as the North Carolina APSE state chapter board president. Along with her role at NC APSE, Bridget has served as a co-chair of Employment First North Carolina.
After getting a degree in psychology with an education concentration by teaching in a school, Bridget realized quickly that she loved teaching but didn't really love being in a classroom. She found herself drawn to human services and specifically working with adults helping them find jobs.
Bridget's hobbies include reading, painting, traveling and relaxing at the beach. Bridget also spends time volunteering with many organizations in her community.
