Celebrating a Special Mother's Day

An Easterseals UCP Teacher Shares Her "Miracle Baby" Story

GREENVILLE, N.C., May 13, 2017

Mothers come in different shapes, sizes, colors and age.  Since 1914, Americans have been celebrating moms with the official beginning of Mother’s Day.

We’d like to share one mom’s special story on Mother’s Day. For 20 years, Dawn Doggett has been working at the Easterseals UCP Summer Moore Child Development Center in Greenville, NC.  She started out as a teacher in one of the classrooms and loved every moment teaching special needs and typical children new skills.  Dawn is now the director and oversees the center, the classrooms and activities.

In 2015, Dawn became a mother herself. The birth of her baby girl, Emma, was challenging. Due to health problems, Emma, was born early at only 25 weeks. Sadly, Emma’s twin brother didn’t survive. After months of hospitalization and a wide range of emotions, Dawn knew her baby girl needed extra care.Emma was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy.

Dawn knew Easterseals UCP was the right place for Emma.  When her baby was ten months old she signed her up at her place of work because she was confident her precious girl would get the best care. With the help of occupational therapy and continued love, 21-month-old Emma, is taking baby steps – literally.  Her steps were caught on video recently.  Dawn said, “She was so proud of herself in the video!”

“She is unable to sit up for more than a few seconds by herself, but loves to be standing and doing what all the other kids are doing,” said Emma’s Mom.

With the help of a walker, Emma is up and seeing what the other children are doing.  For Dawn, this is a dream come true as her Emma, who she calls her “Miracle Baby”, is smiling and moving.

“I love my job and am passionate about the work I do at Summer Moore. I have always felt that ESUCP and Summer Moore made positive outcomes possible for our children and families; now Emma and I are on the receiving end and I couldn’t be more grateful for the team at ESUCP.”

Happy Mother’s Day to Dawn and every mom on this day!

“Mothers hold their children’s hands for a short while, but their hearts forever.”
