Celebrating National Foster Care Month

Fostering Love and Hope

May 2, 2022

May is National Foster Care Month. Did you know that half a million children and teens are in the foster care system nationwide? In North Carolina, more than 11,000 children live in foster care. Each year, Easterseals UCP assists 270 foster care children in North Carolina. Our mission for foster care is to place children in loving, out-of-home care until the transition into a permanent home takes place.

About Easterseals UCP Foster Care Services

Easterseals UCP’s inclusive foster care program helps make meaningful and life-changing connections. We serve a diverse group of children who are predominantly school-age and oftentimes living with behavioral and emotional challenges.

Meet Ivan

Meet Ivan G!

When he was just two weeks old, Ivan went into foster care. He spent two years in foster care until he found his forever home with two loving adoptive mothers! “Ivan is the apple of our eye,” says Marybeth and Ginger G. After they found out the adoption was official, they took Ivan to get ice cream and celebrate with his new family.

“Until about 3-4 years ago we had only a couple LGBTQ foster parents," says Deanna Cornett, ESUCP Foster Care Program Director. "Being able to welcome individuals into our programs who other agencies often don’t include has been a tremendous step forward! We now provide training specific to fostering LGBTQ youth and have licensed quite a few LGBTQ parents. We want prospective foster parents – gay, trans, straight, black, white, brown, green or purple – to know that there is a child just waiting for them to say “yes!”

Quotes from Foster Care Families

Foster care impacts more than the children we serve. Our foster care services impact parents, families and our communities. Here is what our foster care families have to say...

“Being a foster parent is one of the hardest and most rewarding experiences I’ve ever participated in. I was terrified to take this journey, but it was super important to my partner so we dove right in. It has presented challenges that I have struggled to get through, but also some of the best times that I will cherish for the rest of my life. I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything, and would encourage anyone who is even thinking it would be something they’re interested in to give it a shot. It has changed my life in the best ways imaginable, and has taught me to love in ways I didn’t think were possible. I can’t imagine life any other way at this point, and I look forward to whatever life has in store for us!” - Brittany, Foster Mother

“I have been lucky enough to witness a beautiful story get a happy ending. We placed a sweet little guy when he was two weeks old in a wonderful foster home. Now, two years later, his loving foster moms have been able to adopt him and he has found his forever family!”- Jean-Marie, MSW, LCSW

“Our Child Placement Program here in Wilmington has been able to give a safe and loving home to many teenagers in the area who have faced persecution and discrimination based on their gender identity and sexual orientation. I am so proud of the group of loving, accepting, and compassionate foster and adoptive parents who have surrounded these young people with support and safety.” - Mia, MSW, LCSW

“I’m FOREVER grateful for what y’all did to help my daughter and my family. Truly over and beyond…THANK YOU!” - A mother who partnered with Child Placement & Support Services to receive Intensive Alternative Family Treatment services for her daughter.

“Fostering takes an abundance of patience, courage, and support. The stay might be temporary, but the impact is forever long. My goal is for them to become highly productive and positive people with a limitless future! I hope they understand I’m always in their corner, I support them, and will always be a shoulder to lean in!” - Darian, Foster Mother

“Being Foster Parents is living out our purpose in life. It’s having compassion to serve, and the will to help and love others.” - Maria, ESUCP Foster Mother

“To have been given the opportunity to share my heart with the children in my home and receive their love in return is an honor. Our experiences together have bonded us forever as a family. Being a foster/adoptive parent is a life changing experience that I am grateful for.” - Tamara, Foster Mother
