June is National Camping Month

Celebrate the outdoors

June 1, 2022

There's no better way to celebrate National Camping Month than to share some campfire stories from our campers and counselors at Camp Easterseals UCP!

What is Camp Easterseals UCP?

Camp Easterseals UCP is an overnight camp near Roanoke, Virginia for children and adults living with disabilities and special needs. Our camp offers traditional camp activities such as canoeing, crafts, climbing wall, horseback riding, campfire songs and more. Our accessible facility in the beautiful mountain countryside provides many opportunities for campers to connect with nature.

Hilary’s campfire story

"When I first heard about working at Camp Easterseals UCP, I was really excited for new experiences. Camp really made me a better person. When I returned home to México, I couldn’t stop talking it. I made the best real friends and I’m already applying for my 4th year at camp. I can’t wait to see my amazing campers again and see friends who live miles away from me and still have a place in my heart!"

Ashton's campfire story

"I will literally never turn down a chance to talk about camp! I spent two of the best summers of my life at this wonderful place! Camp Easterseals UCP is a place dedicated to acceptance, friendship and fun for EVERYONE. Camp ESUCP changed my life in so many amazing ways. I created friendships that I will cherish forever, memories that I will never forget and experiences that taught me so much. I can’t thank camp enough for what it did for me."

Amanda’s campfire story

"This camp is a second home to the campers and staff alike. It is literally the happiest place on earth, where everyone is inclusive and full of love. Campers get to try new things with the support of their friends, accomplish tasks they didn’t think were possible and form friendships that will last a lifetime. Nothing is impossible at camp, from the rock wall to swimming, canoeing, archery and so much more."

When campers experience Camp ESUCP, they see many benefits including:

  • Increased independence- Campers spend a weekend, a week or two weeks away from their daily routines.
  • Improved self-esteem- Campers build confidence by reaching goals once thought to be unreachable.
  • Forged friendships and social skills- Campers meet new friends, reconnect with old friends and build their social networks.
  • Unique outdoor experience- From canoeing down Craig's Creek to sleeping underneath the stars, campers have an unforgettable time enjoying nature.
