Foster Care

Foster love, foster hope. The need is urgent. Half a million children and teens are in the foster care system nationwide. In North Carolina, more than 11,000 children live in foster care. Each year, Easterseals UCP (ESUCP) assists 270 foster care children in North Carolina. Our mission for foster care is to place children in loving, out-of-home care until the transition into a permanent home takes place.

Become a Foster Parent

Our Foster Care team is led by Deanna, Program Director, who strongly believes that every child deserves a safe and nurturing home with a family where they feel safe and loved. The child placement teams work to recruit and train foster families where children can receive the care they deserve.

deannaEasterseals UCP’s inclusive foster care program helps make meaningful and life-changing connections. We serve a diverse group of children who are predominantly school-age and oftentimes living with behavioral and emotional challenges. In addition, many have been in the foster care system for an extended period of time and have experienced a wide range of trauma.

“Until about 3-4 years ago we had only a couple LGBTQ foster parents,” says Deanna. “Being able to welcome individuals into our programs who other agencies often don’t include has been a tremendous step forward! We now provide training specific to fostering LGBTQ youth and have licensed quite a few LGBTQ parents. We want prospective foster parents – gay, trans, straight, black, white, brown, green or purple – to know that there is a child just waiting for them to say “yes!”

Each foster parent/family brings different strengths to the table, so matching children to the best possible family for his/her personal circumstances is critical in order for children to succeed. It's our vision is to see children in the foster care system reunified with their families when deemed safe and appropriate. Should a child need the services of a foster home, we'll provide the best out-of-home care possible until a more permanent plan can be achieved.

Easterseals UCP offers 3 types of foster care:

Traditional Foster Care box   Therapeutic Foster Care box   IAFT box

To get started, we know that successful foster parents love kids and want to help.
